Possible Causes

Worn ceramic/carbon shaft seal, Running pump dry causing seal overheating, Misaligned motor to pump housing, Corrosion on seal plate

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power and close suction and return valves before disassembling the pump. Relieve system pressure.

  • Confirm leak source: Dry the pump and run briefly to observe. A drip from the joint between the motor and the Waterway pump housing indicates a shaft seal leak.
  • Disassemble wet end: Remove the pump housing bolts, separate the housing from the motor, and remove the diffuser and impeller according to the Waterway service manual.
  • Replace shaft seal: Carefully remove the old shaft seal halves from the impeller and seal plate. Install a new genuine Waterway shaft seal, avoiding touching the polished faces with bare fingers.
  • Inspect seal plate: Check the seal plate for grooves or corrosion where the seal seats. Replace the seal plate if damaged.
  • Reassemble and test: Reassemble the pump, prime it, and run while checking for leaks. Do not run the pump dry, as this will quickly damage the new seal.
