Possible Causes
Aged or water‑damaged motor bearings, Corrosion from shaft seal leak, Misalignment between motor and pump housing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power and allow the motor to stop completely before touching it.
- Isolate noise source: Use a mechanic’s stethoscope or a long screwdriver to listen at the motor body versus the pump housing. Bearing noise will be loudest at the motor.
- Check for shaft play: With power off, grasp the motor shaft and check for side‑to‑side movement. Excessive play indicates worn bearings.
- Inspect for leaks: Look for evidence of a shaft seal leak that may have allowed water into the bearings.
- Replace motor or bearings: On most Waterway pumps, replacing the entire motor assembly is more practical than pressing in new bearings. Transfer the pump end (housing, impeller, seal) to the new motor using a new shaft seal.
