Possible Causes

Air leak at pump lid O-ring, Air leak on suction fittings or unions, Blocked skimmer or main drain line, Pump not fully primed

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power before opening the pump lid. Do not run the pump without water.

  • Prime the pump: Remove the Zodiac pump lid, fill the strainer housing completely with pool water using a bucket or hose, reinstall the lid securely, then restore power and start the pump.
  • Inspect lid O-ring: Remove the lid O-ring, clean the groove, and inspect for cracks or flattening. Apply a thin coat of silicone-based pool lube and reinstall. Replace the O-ring if damaged.
  • Check suction-side unions and fittings: Look for bubbles in the pump basket while running. Tighten unions on the suction side and inspect for cracks in fittings or PVC joints leading to the pump.
  • Clear obstructions: Clean skimmer baskets and check for obstructions at the skimmer throat and main drain. If a line is suspected blocked, have a technician blow out the line.

If the pump still loses prime quickly, the suction plumbing may have a hidden air leak that requires professional pressure testing.
