Possible Causes

Seized motor bearings, Debris jammed in impeller, Failed start capacitor (on single-speed models), Low supply voltage

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power and verify the pump cannot start unexpectedly before working on it.

  • Check for impeller jam: Remove the pump lid and basket, and feel for debris in the impeller. Clear any obstructions.
  • Spin motor shaft: At the rear of the motor, remove the cover and try to rotate the shaft or fan by hand. If it is stiff or locked, the motor bearings are likely seized.
  • Inspect capacitor (if accessible): On some Zodiac single-speed pumps, the start capacitor is under a hump cover. Look for bulging or leaking. Replace with an identical-rated capacitor if faulty.
  • Verify voltage: Have a qualified person check that supply voltage is within spec.

If the motor remains unable to start, replacement of the motor assembly is usually required.
