Possible Causes
Worn ceramic/carbon shaft seal, Dry-running pump, Chemical damage to seal surfaces, Misalignment during prior repair
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power and close valves or plug lines to prevent water flow before disassembling the pump.
- Confirm leak source: Dry the area and observe. If water appears at the joint between the pump housing and motor, the mechanical seal is likely leaking.
- Plan for seal replacement: Obtain a Zodiac-compatible seal kit for your specific pump model (includes mechanical seal and gaskets).
- Disassemble wet end: Remove the pump housing bolts, pull the motor and seal plate assembly, and remove the impeller to access the seal. Note orientation of old seal parts.
- Install new seal: Press the new ceramic seat into the seal plate and the carbon/spring half onto the impeller shaft, avoiding touching polished faces with bare fingers.
- Reassemble and test: Reassemble the pump, restore water and power, and check for leaks.
If you are not comfortable with pump disassembly, have a pool technician perform the seal replacement.
