Possible Causes
Failed oven temperature sensor (RTD), Shorted oven sensor wiring harness, Stuck closed bake or broil relay on control board, Poor oven cavity ventilation or blocked vents
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn the oven OFF and switch the breaker OFF. Allow the oven to cool completely before inspection.
- Visual check: Ensure oven vents (usually at the back of the cooktop or control panel) are not blocked by foil, pans, or debris.
- Test oven temperature sensor:
- Remove the rear panel or open the oven and locate the thin metal probe at the back wall (oven sensor).
- Disconnect the sensor connector.
- Using a multimeter, measure resistance across the sensor leads at room temperature. A typical Amana sensor should read about 1050–1100 Ω at 70°F (21°C).
- If reading is far outside this range (open or shorted), replace the sensor.
- Inspect sensor wiring: Check the harness from the sensor to the control for pinched, burned, or broken wires. Repair or replace as needed.
- Control board check: If the sensor tests good and wiring is intact, the bake or broil relay on the electronic control may be stuck closed, causing overheating. In this case, replace the electronic oven control board.
Do not continue using the oven until the cause of the over-temperature condition is corrected.
