Oven overheats, temperature much higher than set, F2 error on Avanti range display, sometimes with beeping and automatic shutoff
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker. Allow the oven to cool completely before touching any internal parts.
- Visual check: Inspect the oven cavity for foil covering the bottom, blocked vents, or heavy grease buildup that can trap heat. Remove foil and clean vents.
- Check oven sensor: Locate the temperature sensor probe inside the oven (usually a thin metal rod at the back wall). Remove the two mounting screws and gently pull the sensor forward to access the connector. Disconnect and inspect for corrosion or burnt pins.
- Basic resistance test (if you have a meter): With the sensor disconnected and at room temperature (~70°F / 21°C), measure resistance across the sensor leads. A typical Avanti RTD sensor should read around 1050–1100 Ω at room temp. If it is open, shorted, or far out of range, replace the sensor.
- Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor wires to the EOC. Look for pinched, melted, or bare wires touching metal. Repair or replace damaged wiring harness sections.
- Control board check: If the sensor tests good and wiring is intact, the bake or broil relay on the EOC may be stuck closed, causing overheating. In this case, replace the electronic oven control board.
After replacing parts, clear the error by disconnecting power for several minutes, then test with a low-temperature bake cycle while monitoring temperature.
