Possible Causes
Shorted oven temperature sensor, sensor wires shorted to chassis, moisture in sensor connector, failed sensor input on control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker before removing any panels or touching wiring.
- Inspect sensor and wiring: Remove the oven temperature sensor from inside the cavity. Check for damaged insulation or signs of the sensor sheath being bent or crushed.
- Measure resistance: With the sensor disconnected, measure resistance at room temperature. A reading near 0 Ω indicates a shorted sensor. Replace if shorted or far out of spec.
- Check for shorts to chassis: With the sensor disconnected at both ends, check continuity from each sensor lead to the oven chassis. There should be no continuity. If there is, inspect the harness for pinched or melted insulation where it passes through the rear wall of the oven.
- Dry connectors: If the range recently experienced steam cleaning or heavy moisture, dry the sensor connector and harness thoroughly before retesting.
- Replace components: Replace the oven temperature sensor if shorted. If wiring and sensor are good but F4 persists, replace the electronic range control (ERC).
