Overheating or Contaminant Burning
Oven or cooktop produces a burning smell or smoke during normal cooking (not initial burn-in).

Possible Causes
Food spills on elements, Grease buildup in oven cavity, Foreign objects on cooktop surface, Failing insulation or wiring overheating
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you see flames, turn off the appliance and, if safe, keep the door closed to smother the fire. Do not use water on grease fires.
- Inspect and clean: Once cool, inspect the oven cavity and cooktop for spills, foil, or plastic that may be burning. Clean with appropriate oven cleaner or mild detergent.
- Check around elements: Remove oven racks and inspect around the bake element for charred debris. Clean carefully.
- Monitor wiring (advanced): If the smell is electrical (sharp, acrid) and not food-related, disconnect power and inspect wiring and insulation around elements and control board for overheating. Replace any damaged components.
- Ventilation: Use the range hood or open windows during high-heat cooking to disperse normal odors.
