Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker before accessing the cooktop.

Swap test (if possible):
- On some coil-element models, swap the suspect element with a known-good one of the same size. If the problem follows the element, replace the surface element.
Access radiant element:
- For smooth-top ranges, lift or remove the glass cooktop per the service manual.
- Inspect the radiant element for visible breaks or burn marks.
- Test for continuity; if open, replace the radiant surface element.
Check switch:
- Test the corresponding infinite switch or burner control for continuity according to the wiring diagram.
- Replace the surface element switch / infinite switch if defective.
