Possible Causes
Burner control switch stuck closed, Liquid spill under control knobs, Shorted ignition wiring, Defective spark generator
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn all knobs to OFF. Disconnect the appliance from mains power to stop the clicking. Close the gas supply if you smell gas.
- Dry the area: If the issue started after a spill or cleaning, remove the burner knobs and gently dry around the valve stems with a cloth. Allow several hours for moisture to evaporate.
- Inspect switches: Lift the top panel (on ranges) to access the small ignition switches on each gas valve. Look for signs of water, corrosion, or broken switch bodies.
- Test switches: With a multimeter, check each switch for continuity. It should be open when the knob is off and closed only when turned to ignite.
- Replace faulty switch: Replace any switch that remains closed or behaves erratically.
- Check wiring: Inspect ignition wires for damage or shorts to chassis. Repair or replace as needed.
- Replace spark generator: If all switches are good but clicking continues when powered, the spark generator may be faulty and should be replaced.
