Possible Causes
Food or grease spilled on elements, Foil blocking vents, Overheating wiring or components, Failing insulation
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you see flames or heavy smoke, turn off the oven and burners, open windows, and do not open the oven door until flames are out. Disconnect power if safe.
- Inspect interior: Once cool, check for food or grease buildup on elements, oven floor, and racks. Clean with appropriate oven cleaner.
- Check vents: Ensure vents are not blocked by foil or pans, which can cause overheating.
- Smell source: If the smell seems electrical (sharp, chemical), unplug or turn off power and inspect wiring and control boards for signs of overheating.
- First use exception: A slight odor on first use is normal as manufacturing oils burn off; run an empty bake cycle at 400°F for 30–60 minutes with ventilation.
Persistent burning smells without visible spills warrant professional inspection.
