Possible Causes
Defective spark generator (ignition transformer), Broken or wet spark electrodes at burners, Loose ignition wiring harness, Stuck ignition switch on a control knob
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off gas and disconnect power. Avoid working around open gas lines.
- Dry electrodes: If the cooktop was recently cleaned, moisture may be causing F12. Allow the appliance to dry for several hours or gently dry around each electrode with a hair dryer on low (power disconnected).
- Inspect electrodes: Remove burner caps and check each Hotpoint-Ariston electrode for cracks, heavy deposits, or broken porcelain. Clean gently with a non-abrasive pad.
- Check wiring: Lift the cooktop surface (on models with hinged tops) or remove the top panel. Inspect the ignition harness from the spark generator to each electrode for loose or disconnected leads.
- Test spark generator: With power restored and gas off, turn a burner knob to ignite and observe for sparks at all electrodes. If none spark and F12 appears, the spark generator is likely faulty.
- Replace spark generator: Disconnect the old module, noting the position of each lead, mount the new Hotpoint-Ariston ignition transformer, and reconnect wires as original.
