Possible Causes
Liquid spill causing a switch to short, Stuck or broken ignition microswitch on a valve, Shorted ignition wiring harness, Faulty spark generator stuck in run mode
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off gas and disconnect power to stop the clicking while diagnosing.
- Dry the cooktop: If the issue started after a spill or cleaning, allow the cooktop to dry for 12–24 hours. You can speed this by gently warming the area with a hair dryer (power disconnected).
- Identify faulty switch: Reconnect power and, one by one, slightly move each knob while listening. If clicking changes when a specific knob is touched, its switch may be stuck.
- Access switches: Remove knobs and lift the top panel to expose the ignition switches. Inspect for moisture, corrosion, or broken housings.
- Replace switch: Replace any damaged Hotpoint-Ariston ignition switch and ensure wiring is correctly routed and insulated.
- Spark generator: If all switches test good but clicking persists, the spark generator may be faulty and should be replaced.
