Possible Causes

Open bake element, open broil element, tripped thermal cutoff, failed EOC bake/broil relays

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker before accessing elements or rear panels.

Steps to check:

  • Element inspection: Visually inspect the bake (bottom) and broil (top) elements for breaks, blisters, or burn marks. Replace any visibly damaged element.
  • Continuity test: Disconnect one wire from each element and test for continuity with a multimeter. An open reading means the element is bad.
  • Thermal cutoff: On many Hotpoint ranges, a thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat is mounted on the rear of the oven cavity. Test for continuity; replace if open.
  • Control output: If elements and thermal devices are good, the EOC may not be sending power to the elements. Check for 240 VAC at the element terminals during a bake command (only if you are trained and equipped to work safely with live voltage). Replace the EOC if no output.

Warning: Live voltage testing is hazardous. If you are not experienced, have a professional perform these checks.
