Safety: Disconnect mains before removing hob or accessing elements.

Steps:

1. Swap controls test: If two zones share similar controls, test whether the fault follows the control or stays with the zone.
2. Access underside: Remove the hob from the worktop or open the cooker top to access the hotplate elements.
3. Inspect terminals: Check for burnt or loose spade connectors on the faulty zone.
4. Test element: Disconnect wires and measure resistance across the element. An open reading indicates a failed element that must be replaced.
5. Check control switch: If the element is good, test the corresponding energy regulator or control switch for continuity when turned on. Replace if faulty.
