Possible Causes
Food or grease on bake/broil elements, spills on oven bottom, residue from new oven coatings, foil contacting elements
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Ensure good kitchen ventilation. Avoid inhaling heavy smoke; turn off oven if flames appear.
- Initial burn-in: For new ovens, run an empty bake cycle at 400–450°F for 30–60 minutes with windows open to burn off manufacturing residues.
- Clean spills: Once cool, remove racks and clean the oven interior with a non-abrasive cleaner. Remove heavy grease from elements and bottom.
- Avoid foil on bottom: Do not line the oven bottom with foil, as it can trap spills and cause smoke.
