Possible Causes
Clogged burner cap or ports, misaligned burner parts, weak gas supply or closed valve, faulty thermocouple or flame sensor, defective gas valve coil
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off gas and power before disassembling burners. Work in a well-ventilated area and avoid open flames.
- Clean burner: Remove the burner cap and head. Clean all ports with a soft brush and a wooden toothpick; do not enlarge holes.
- Check alignment: Reassemble the burner ensuring the cap sits flat and centered.
- Gas supply: Confirm that the gas shutoff valve is fully open and that other gas appliances in the home work normally.
- Thermocouple inspection: For burners with flame failure devices, ensure the thermocouple tip is directly in the flame and not bent away. Clean soot from the tip with fine emery cloth.
- Hold knob: When lighting, press and hold the knob for 5–10 seconds to allow the thermocouple to heat and keep the valve open.
- Replace components: If the flame still goes out, replace the thermocouple or the gas safety valve for that burner.
Warning: If you smell gas continuously or see yellow, sooty flames, shut off gas and call a professional.
