Possible Causes

Weak or open bake igniter, Broken igniter wiring, Failed gas safety valve (oven safety valve), Dirty or misaligned burner ports

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off gas supply at the shutoff valve and disconnect power before servicing. Gas leaks and ignition components are hazardous.

Steps:

  • Visual check: Start a bake cycle and observe the igniter (through the oven window if possible). A healthy glow-type igniter should glow bright orange and ignite the burner within 30–60 seconds. If it glows weakly or not at all, it is likely bad.
  • Current test (advanced): With a clamp meter and proper safety precautions, measure igniter current draw. Most Magic Chef glow igniters require ~3.2–3.6 A to open the gas valve. Replace if below spec.
  • Replace igniter: Remove the oven bottom panel and flame spreader. Disconnect the igniter wiring (often via a quick connector under the oven). Remove mounting screws, install the new OEM-style igniter, and route wires away from direct flame.
  • Burner cleaning: Clean burner ports with a soft brush or compressed air to ensure even flame.

Warning: Never tap or strike the gas valve. After reassembly, check for gas leaks with a soap solution at all fittings.
