Possible Causes
Weak bake igniter, Failed gas safety valve, No gas supply or closed shutoff valve, Faulty oven thermostat/EOC output
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off gas at the shutoff valve and power at the breaker before servicing. If you smell strong gas, ventilate the area and do not use open flames.
- Check gas supply: Ensure the gas shutoff valve behind the range is fully open and other gas appliances work.
- Observe igniter (with caution): Restore power and gas, set oven to bake, and look through the oven bottom or access panel. The igniter should glow bright orange within 30–60 seconds. If it glows weakly or not at all, it is likely bad.
- Test igniter current (advanced): Use a clamp meter to measure igniter current draw. Many Maytag gas ovens require around 3.2–3.6 A. If below spec, replace the igniter.
- Replace igniter: Turn off gas and power, remove the oven bottom and flame spreader, disconnect the igniter wiring, and install a new OEM igniter. Do not touch the new igniter element with bare fingers.
- If igniter good but no flame: The gas safety valve may be defective and should be replaced.
