Possible Causes

Faulty thermocouple, misaligned thermocouple tip, weak magnet in gas valve, poor thermocouple connection at valve

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Gas safety is critical. If unsure, use a Gas Safe registered engineer.

  • Lighting test: Press and hold the knob to light the burner. Keep it held for 10–15 seconds. If the flame goes out when released, the FSD is not holding.
  • Check thermocouple position: Ensure the thermocouple tip is directly in the flame. Gently adjust its position if bent away.
  • Clean tip: Lightly clean the thermocouple tip with fine abrasive pad to remove soot.
  • Replace thermocouple: If the problem persists, the thermocouple is likely faulty. Replacement involves removing the hob top, disconnecting the old thermocouple from the gas valve, and fitting a new one.
  • Gas valve: If a new thermocouple does not cure the issue, the gas valve magnet may be defective and the valve should be replaced by a qualified engineer.
