Possible Causes

Shorted temperature sensor, sensor wiring short to chassis, stuck closed oven relay on control PCB, failed overheat thermostat

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power at the cooker switch and allow the appliance to cool fully. Do not continue using an oven that overheats.

Steps to check:

  • Visual inspection: Check the oven cavity for foil or trays covering the base or fan vents, which can cause local overheating. Remove any obstructions.
  • Check temperature sensor: Access the sensor from the rear as described for F1. Measure resistance at room temperature. If the reading is significantly lower than specification (e.g. <800 Ω) or changes erratically when gently moved, replace the sensor.
  • Inspect wiring: Look for insulation damage where the sensor cable passes through the rear panel. Repair or replace the harness if it is shorting to the metal chassis.
  • Check overheat thermostat: Many Rangemaster models have a manual-reset safety thermostat on the rear or top of the oven cavity. With power off, locate the small round thermostat with two terminals and a red reset button. Press the button firmly until it clicks. If it repeatedly trips, the root cause (fan failure, blocked vents, or control fault) must be addressed.
  • Fan operation: Turn power back on and start the oven. Confirm that the cooling fan and, on fan ovens, the convection fan run correctly. If a fan is not running, replace the appropriate fan motor.
  • If problem persists: A welded relay on the main control PCB can keep the element powered. This requires PCB repair or replacement by a professional.
