Possible Causes
Failed bake or broil igniter, Open gas safety valve coil, Faulty oven thermostat/EOC relay, Broken igniter wiring
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off gas supply and power before accessing the oven burner area. If you smell strong gas, ventilate and do not attempt to light the oven.
- Observe igniter: Restore power and start a bake cycle. Look through the oven bottom panel to see if the igniter glows. If it does not glow at all, suspect a bad igniter or wiring.
- Check igniter glow strength: A weak, dull orange glow that never lights the burner usually indicates a failing igniter that cannot draw enough current to open the gas valve.
- Test igniter resistance: With power off, disconnect the igniter and measure resistance. An open circuit or very high resistance means it should be replaced.
- Replace igniter: Remove the oven bottom panel and flame spreader, unbolt the igniter from the burner, and install a new bake igniter or broil igniter as appropriate.
- Gas valve check: If a new igniter glows strongly but the burner never lights, the gas safety valve may be defective and should be replaced by a qualified technician.
