Viking range oven will not heat; display shows F01 shortly after a bake or broil cycle is started.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power at the breaker or unplug the range before removing any panels. Allow the oven to cool completely.
Steps to check and correct:
- Access the sensor: Open the oven door and locate the temperature sensor probe on the rear interior wall (usually upper left or upper center). Remove the two mounting screws and gently pull the sensor forward to expose the connector.
- Inspect the connector: Check for loose, burnt, or corroded pins. Reseat the connector firmly. If the wiring is brittle or insulation is damaged, the harness may need replacement.
- Test the sensor: With a multimeter set to ohms, measure resistance across the sensor leads. At room temperature (~70°F / 21°C), most Viking RTD sensors should read around 1080–1100 Ω. If the reading is extremely high (open) or very low (shorted), replace the sensor.
- Check wiring to the control: If the sensor tests good, remove the back panel of the range (with power off) and trace the sensor harness to the electronic oven control (EOC). Look for pinched, cut, or burnt wires and repair or replace as needed.
- Reset power: Restore power and try a bake cycle. If F01 returns and the sensor and wiring are confirmed good, the EOC (control board) is likely defective and should be replaced.
When to call a technician: If you are not comfortable testing resistance or accessing the rear control area, or if the control board needs replacement, contact a qualified Viking service technician.
