Defrost Drain Blockage / Drain Pan Overflow
Water leaking onto the floor from the front or under the refrigerator
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Clogged defrost drain hole, Frozen drain tube, Cracked or misaligned drain pan, Excessive frost due to door leaks
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the refrigerator before working inside the freezer. Use towels to catch water.
Steps:
- 1. Locate the defrost drain: Inside the freezer, remove drawers and the rear panel. At the bottom of the evaporator area is a drain hole leading to a tube.
- 2. Clear ice and debris: Use warm water (syringe or turkey baster) to flush the drain until water flows freely to the drain pan under the fridge. Do not use sharp tools.
- 3. Check external drain pan: At the back bottom, inspect the drain pan for cracks or misalignment. Reposition or replace if damaged.
- 4. Prevent recurrence: Ensure doors close properly to reduce excess frost that can refreeze in the drain.
