Possible Causes

Defective electronic defrost control on main board, Stuck defrost relay, Corrupted control firmware, Intermittent power supply to control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect power before accessing the control board.

What to do:

  • Power cycle: Unplug the unit for 10 minutes to reset the control. If E5 returns quickly, the fault is likely persistent.
  • Check for frost pattern: Remove the freezer rear panel after several hours of operation. If the evaporator is completely encased in ice, defrost is not occurring. If only a small section frosts, there may be a sealed system issue instead.
  • Inspect control board: Access the main control (usually at the rear or top). Look for burnt spots, swollen capacitors, or a burnt odor.
  • Connector check: Firmly re-seat all connectors, especially those labeled for defrost heater, sensors, and power input.
  • Replace control if needed: If heater and sensors test good but E5 persists, replace the main control board with the correct Arctic part number.

Warning: Do not bypass defrost safety devices (thermostats or fuses). Doing so can create a fire hazard.
