Possible Causes
Failed evaporator fan motor, Ice obstructing fan blades, Loose or damaged fan wiring, Control board not supplying power to fan
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before accessing the fan. Beware of sharp metal edges.
Procedure:
- Access fan: Remove freezer shelves and the rear interior panel to expose the evaporator fan assembly.
- Check for ice blockage: Look for ice around the fan shroud or blades. If present, fully defrost the area using warm air (hair dryer on low, kept at a safe distance) and towels. Do not overheat plastic parts.
- Spin test: Gently spin the fan blades by hand. They should rotate freely without grinding or wobbling. If stiff or noisy, the motor is likely failing.
- Inspect wiring: Ensure the fan connector is firmly attached and wires are not cut or pinched.
- Replace fan motor: If the motor does not run when powered (technician test) or is noisy/stiff, replace the evaporator fan motor assembly. Reinstall the panel and ensure no wires contact the fan.
Note: After repair, allow several hours for temperatures to normalize.
