Mechanical Vibration or Fan/Compressor Mounting Issue
Refrigerator making loud knocking, banging, or rattling noises during operation
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Loose compressor mounting brackets, Fan blades hitting ice or wiring, Refrigerator not leveled, Panels or tubing vibrating against cabinet
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before touching moving parts or internal components.
Steps:
- Level the unit: Adjust the front leveling legs so the refrigerator is stable and does not rock. Slightly tilt back so doors close by themselves.
- Check rear components: Remove the rear panel and inspect the condenser fan for contact with wires or debris. Reposition any items touching the blades.
- Secure tubing: Look for refrigerant lines or wiring harnesses vibrating against the cabinet. Use foam pads or clips to secure them.
- Compressor mounts: Ensure the compressor mounting bolts or rubber grommets are intact. Replace worn grommets if the compressor is banging against the frame.
Note: Some brief noises (clicks, pops) are normal during defrost and temperature changes, but continuous loud banging is not.
