Possible Causes

Defective freezer thermistor, Broken thermistor lead wires, Poor connection at control board, Thermistor encased in ice causing false readings

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power before removing panels or handling wiring.

  • 1. Access the freezer thermistor: Remove shelves and the rear interior panel of the freezer (usually a few Phillips screws). The thermistor is typically clipped to the evaporator tubing or mounted on the rear wall.
  • 2. Check for ice buildup: If the thermistor is buried in ice, carefully defrost the area with a hair dryer on low, keeping it moving to avoid melting plastic. Do not use sharp tools.
  • 3. Test the thermistor: Unplug the thermistor connector. Measure resistance with a multimeter at freezer temperature (or at room temperature if removed). Compare to expected NTC values; OL or 0Ω indicates failure.
  • 4. Inspect wiring: Look for pinched, cut, or brittle wires along the path to the control board. Repair any damaged sections with proper crimp connectors and heat-shrink tubing.
  • 5. Replace if needed: Install a new freezer thermistor, clipping it in the same location. Ensure good contact with the evaporator tubing if originally designed that way.
  • 6. Reassemble and test: Refit the rear panel, restore power, and monitor freezer temperature for 12–24 hours. The E2 code should clear automatically on many models after a few good readings.
