Possible Causes

Failed ambient thermistor, Loose or corroded sensor connector, Sensor knocked out of position near air intake, Control board input fault

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the refrigerator before accessing the control area.

  • 1. Identify ambient sensor location: On many Avanti models, the ambient or cabinet sensor is near the front air intake or behind the control panel grille.
  • 2. Inspect sensor and wiring: Remove the small cover and check the sensor body and wires for damage. Ensure the sensor is not dangling or pressed against a warm component.
  • 3. Test resistance: Disconnect the sensor and measure resistance at room temperature with a multimeter. Compare to typical NTC values (often 5k–10kΩ at 77°F). Replace if open, shorted, or far out of spec.
  • 4. Check control board connector: Remove the control panel and verify the sensor harness is fully seated on the board. Clean any oxidation with contact cleaner.
  • 5. Replace faulty parts: If the sensor tests bad, install a new ambient/cabinet thermistor. If the sensor is good but E3 persists, the control board input may be defective and the main control board may need replacement.
  • 6. Reset and monitor: Restore power and monitor operation for several hours. The error should clear if the sensor circuit is restored.
