Possible Causes
Open or shorted defrost thermistor, Thermistor not properly attached to evaporator, Damaged wiring in evaporator compartment, Moisture intrusion at connector
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. Be cautious of sharp metal edges inside the freezer compartment.
- 1. Access evaporator area: Empty the freezer and remove the rear interior panel to expose the evaporator coil.
- 2. Locate defrost sensor: The defrost thermistor is usually clipped to the evaporator tubing or attached with a metal clip or zip tie.
- 3. Inspect attachment: Ensure the sensor is firmly attached to the tubing and not hanging loose. A loose sensor can misread temperature and trigger E4.
- 4. Test sensor: Disconnect the thermistor and measure resistance with a multimeter. At a cold temperature (e.g., place the sensor in ice water for a few minutes), resistance should increase significantly compared to room temperature. OL or 0Ω indicates failure.
- 5. Check wiring: Look for brittle insulation, corrosion at connectors, or wires that have rubbed against metal. Repair or replace as needed.
- 6. Replace if faulty: Install a new defrost/evaporator thermistor, securing it tightly to the coil in the same location.
- 7. Defrost manually if iced: If the evaporator is heavily iced, fully defrost it with a hair dryer on low or by leaving the unit unplugged with doors open (towels in place) until all ice is gone.
- 8. Reassemble and test: Refit the panel, restore power, and monitor for proper cooling and absence of the E4 code.
