Possible Causes
Failed evaporator fan motor, Ice obstructing fan blades, Loose fan connector, Control board fan driver failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the refrigerator. Fan blades can be sharp; avoid spinning them by hand when powered.
- 1. Access evaporator fan: Remove freezer shelves and the rear interior panel to expose the fan assembly.
- 2. Check for ice blockage: If the fan is encased in ice, defrost the area completely using a hair dryer on low or by leaving the unit unplugged with doors open. Do not chip ice with sharp tools.
- 3. Spin the fan by hand: It should rotate freely. If stiff or seized, the motor is likely bad.
- 4. Test voltage: With the unit plugged in and calling for cooling (door switch held closed), carefully measure voltage at the fan connector (use extreme caution). You should see around 12V DC or 120V AC depending on design. If correct voltage is present but the fan does not run, the motor is faulty.
- 5. Replace fan motor: Unplug again, remove mounting screws, and install a new evaporator fan motor. Transfer the fan blade if separate and ensure correct orientation.
- 6. If no voltage at fan: The issue may be wiring or the main control board. Inspect harness for damage before condemning the board.
- 7. Reassemble and test: Refit the panel, restore power, and confirm the fan runs when the compressor is on.
