Possible Causes
Failed evaporator fan motor, Ice buildup blocking fan, Faulty door switch, Wiring issue to fan motor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before accessing internal panels. Sharp metal edges inside the freezer can cause injury.
- Check fan operation: Open the freezer door and listen for a fan. On many models the fan stops when the door is open; press and hold the door switch to simulate a closed door. If you do not hear the fan, it may be faulty or blocked by ice.
- Inspect for frost buildup: Look at the rear freezer wall. A thick, even layer of frost or ice suggests a defrost problem that can also stop the fan.
- Access the fan: Unplug the fridge. Remove shelves and the rear inner freezer panel (usually held by screws). Carefully pull the panel forward to expose the evaporator and fan.
- Check for ice obstruction: If the fan blades are encased in ice, defrost the area using warm (not boiling) water in a container placed inside the freezer or a hair dryer on low, keeping it away from plastic parts and wiring.
- Spin and test the fan: Manually spin the fan blades; they should move freely. If stiff or seized, replace the fan motor assembly. If free, check the wiring connector for corrosion or loose fit and reseat it.
- Reassemble and test: Refit the panel, restore power, and listen for the fan after the compressor starts. Cooling should improve over several hours.
- If fan still does not run: The motor may be electrically open or the control board may not be supplying power. This requires multimeter testing and is best handled by a technician.
