Possible Causes

Open or shorted evaporator NTC sensor,Sensor dislodged from evaporator coil,Connector corrosion due to moisture,Defective control board defrost sensor circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety warning: Unplug the refrigerator before accessing the freezer evaporator or control board. Sharp metal edges and ice can cause injury.

Steps to handle E3:

  • 1. Defrost the unit: If the evaporator is heavily iced, unplug the fridge and leave doors open for several hours or use a fan to speed up defrosting. Do not use knives or heat guns.
  • 2. Access the evaporator: Remove freezer drawers and the rear inner panel to expose the evaporator coil and sensor. The sensor is usually clipped to the coil or attached with a metal clip.
  • 3. Inspect the sensor: Check if the sensor is firmly attached to the coil and not dangling. Look for damaged insulation or broken wires.
  • 4. Test the sensor: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the sensor and measure resistance. At around 0–5°C (after partial defrost), NTC resistance will be higher than at room temperature. Infinite or near-zero readings indicate failure.
  • 5. Replace the sensor: Install a new evaporator/defrost sensor of the correct type. Clip it securely to the coil in the same position as the original to ensure accurate defrost control.
  • 6. Check wiring to the board: Trace the harness back to the control board and ensure there are no breaks or corroded connectors. Reseat the plug at the board.
  • 7. Evaluate the control board: If the sensor and wiring are good but E3 persists, the defrost sensor input on the PCB may be faulty and the board will need replacement.

Professional help: If you are not comfortable removing the freezer panel or testing components, contact a service technician.
