Possible Causes

Seized or blocked evaporator fan, Failed fan motor, Broken fan wiring, Ice buildup around fan blades

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator. Fans can start unexpectedly and cause injury.

Step 1 – Listen and inspect:

  • With the unit previously powered, note if you heard any scraping or humming from the fan area.
  • Open the freezer and remove shelves to access the rear panel.
  • Remove the panel to expose the evaporator fan.

Step 2 – Check for obstructions and ice:

  • Look for ice buildup around the fan shroud and blades; defrost any ice with warm air, not sharp tools.
  • Spin the fan blades by hand; they should rotate freely without grinding.

Step 3 – Electrical test:

  • Disconnect the fan connector.
  • Measure resistance across the motor terminals; an open circuit indicates a failed motor.
  • Check for 12–24 V DC or 120/230 V AC supply (depending on model) at the connector when the unit is powered and calling for cooling (this test should be done only if you are comfortable working with live voltage; otherwise, call a technician).

Step 4 – Replace the fan motor:

  • Order the correct evaporator fan motor assembly.
  • Remove mounting screws or clips and transfer the fan blade to the new motor if necessary.
  • Install the new motor, reconnect wiring, and reassemble the rear panel and shelves.
  • Restore power and confirm that the fan runs and E8 clears.
