Possible Causes

Defrost thermistor out of calibration, Loose thermistor connection at evaporator, Damaged thermistor wiring harness, Control board misreading thermistor signal

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect power before accessing the evaporator compartment or control board.

  • 1. Access the evaporator area: Remove freezer drawers and the rear panel to locate the defrost thermistor (usually clipped to the evaporator tubing).
  • 2. Inspect the thermistor: Ensure it is firmly clipped to the tubing and not hanging loose. A loose sensor can misread temperature.
  • 3. Check the connector: Follow the thermistor wires to the connector. Verify it is fully seated and free of corrosion or moisture.
  • 4. Test resistance: With a multimeter, measure thermistor resistance at a known temperature (e.g., in ice water at 32°F/0°C). Compare to Café/GE thermistor specifications. A reading far out of range indicates a bad sensor.
  • 5. Replace thermistor if faulty: Cut and splice using approved connectors or plug in the new sensor if it uses a direct connector. Secure it back to the evaporator tubing.
  • 6. Clear the code: Restore power and allow the unit to run through a defrost cycle. The code should clear automatically if the sensor is now reading correctly.
