E5 appears on the display and the compressor may not start or runs erratically.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Critical safety: Unplug the refrigerator. Work at the rear only when the unit is disconnected. The compressor and start components are connected to mains voltage.
Steps:
- 1. Access the compressor compartment: Remove the lower rear cover to expose the compressor and electrical box on its side.
- 2. Listen for behavior (before unplugging): If you previously heard a clicking sound every few minutes with no sustained compressor run, the start device or overload is suspect.
- 3. Inspect the start relay/PTC and overload: Remove the plastic cover on the compressor terminals. Check for burnt smell, cracked casing, or melted connectors on the CDA compressor start relay/PTC and overload protector.
- 4. Replace suspect start components: These parts are relatively inexpensive and commonly fail. Using your model number, order a compatible CDA compressor start relay/PTC and overload protector. Swap them like-for-like, ensuring firm connections.
- 5. Check wiring: Inspect the harness from the main PCB to the compressor for damage or loose spade terminals.
- 6. If E5 persists and compressor still won’t run: The compressor windings may be open or seized, or the main PCB may not be supplying power. Testing compressor windings and live voltage should only be done by a refrigeration engineer.
Warning: Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration system or replace the compressor yourself; this requires F-Gas certified personnel.
