Possible Causes

Open-circuit thermistor, shorted thermistor, damaged thermistor harness, failed main control board sensor input

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before removing panels or handling wiring. Use a properly insulated meter if testing live circuits is required.

Steps to check and address E1:

  • Power reset: Unplug the unit for 5 minutes, then plug back in to see if the code clears. If E1 returns, continue.
  • Locate the fresh food thermistor: On most Danby refrigerators, the refrigerator (fresh food) thermistor is clipped to the liner wall or behind a small plastic cover near the air return or light housing.
  • Inspect the sensor and wiring: Check for broken wires, loose connectors, corrosion, or signs of moisture damage. Reseat the connector at both the thermistor and the main control board (usually at the rear, behind a metal or plastic cover).
  • Test the thermistor: With power disconnected, remove the thermistor and measure its resistance with a multimeter. At around 25°C (77°F), most Danby NTC thermistors should read roughly 5–10 kΩ (check your model’s service sheet if available). If the reading is open (OL), near 0 Ω, or far outside spec, replace the thermistor.
  • Replace the thermistor if faulty: Install a new OEM Danby refrigerator compartment thermistor, route the wires as originally, and secure the sensor clip firmly to the liner.
  • If thermistor tests good: Inspect the harness from the thermistor to the main control board for pinched or broken wires. Repair or replace the harness if damaged. If wiring is good and E1 persists, the main control board sensor circuit may be defective and should be replaced by a qualified technician.
