Possible Causes
Open or shorted evaporator thermistor, thermistor dislodged from evaporator, damaged wiring harness, failed main control board defrost sensor circuit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the refrigerator before removing the evaporator cover or handling wiring.
Steps to address E3:
- Access the evaporator area: Empty the freezer, remove shelves and the rear interior panel to expose the evaporator coil (on top-freezer or bottom-freezer Danby models).
- Locate the defrost/evaporator thermistor: It is usually clipped to the evaporator tubing or attached to the evaporator cover with a small clip.
- Check for ice buildup: Heavy ice around the sensor can cause incorrect readings. Defrost the area using a hair dryer on low or by leaving the unit unplugged with doors open until ice melts. Protect the floor from water.
- Inspect and test the thermistor: Verify the sensor is firmly clipped to the evaporator. Disconnect it and measure resistance at room temperature. Compare to the expected NTC value. Replace if open, shorted, or out of range.
- Inspect wiring: Follow the thermistor wires to the main control board. Look for broken insulation, loose connectors, or corrosion. Repair or replace the harness if needed.
- Reassemble and test: After replacing the thermistor or repairing wiring, reassemble the evaporator cover, restore power, and monitor operation. If E3 returns with a known-good sensor and wiring, the main control board may require replacement.
