Possible Causes
Open or shorted defrost thermistor, Failed defrost heater, Faulty main control defrost circuit, Loose defrost wiring connector
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before testing.
- Access evaporator: Remove freezer rear panel to expose the evaporator coil and defrost components.
- Check defrost thermistor: The thermistor is usually clipped to the evaporator tubing. Measure resistance at known temperatures and compare to spec. Replace if open/shorted.
- Inspect heater and wiring: Look for burned spots on the heater or melted connectors. Test heater continuity and replace if open.
- Control board evaluation: If all components test good, the main control board may not be initiating defrost and should be replaced.
