Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before accessing the evaporator area. Use caution around sharp metal fins and electrical connectors.
Step 1 – Manually defrost:
- Remove food from the affected compartment and store safely.
- Leave doors open and allow the unit to defrost fully for 12–24 hours with towels to collect water.
Step 2 – Access defrost components:
- Remove the rear interior panel to expose the evaporator, defrost heater, and defrost sensor/thermostat.
- Locate the defrost thermostat (a small round or oval device clipped to the evaporator) or defrost NTC sensor.
Step 3 – Test the sensor/thermostat:
- With the evaporator cold (below freezing), measure continuity of a thermostat or resistance of an NTC sensor.
- A defrost thermostat should show continuity when cold; an NTC should match the specified resistance range.
- Replace the component if readings are incorrect.
Step 4 – Reassemble and monitor:
- Reinstall panels, restore power, and clear E04 if necessary.
- Monitor for several days; if frost returns and E04 reappears, the control board's defrost control may be faulty and require professional replacement.
