Refrigerator shows E5; compressor may not start or may run continuously with poor cooling.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator. Work at the rear only when the unit is disconnected. Compressor circuits carry mains voltage.
Access compressor area:
- Pull the fridge away from the wall.
- Remove the lower rear service panel to expose the compressor, start device, and PCB (if mounted nearby).
Check the start device:
- Locate the plastic start relay/PTC module attached to the compressor terminals.
- Inspect for burn marks, melted plastic, or rattling pieces inside when gently shaken.
- If damaged, replace with a Finlux-compatible compressor start relay/PTC of the same rating.
Inverter models:
- If your Finlux uses an inverter compressor, there will be a separate inverter module connected to the compressor with a multi-core cable.
- Check all connectors for secure fit and signs of overheating.
- Inverter diagnosis beyond visual inspection should be done by a professional due to high voltages.
Re-test:
- After replacing a suspect start device, refit the rear cover, plug the unit in, and listen for the compressor starting smoothly.
- Allow several hours to see if cooling improves and E5 clears.
When to call a technician: If the compressor hums then clicks off, or does not start even with a new start device, the compressor or control electronics may be faulty. These repairs require specialized tools and refrigerant handling certification.
