Possible Causes
Clogged defrost drain, Cracked drain pan, Loose water inlet connection, Damaged water line to dispenser or ice maker
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the refrigerator and shut off the water supply before inspecting for leaks.
- Identify leak source: Check if water appears mostly at the front (often defrost drain) or at the back (often supply line or valve).
- Check defrost drain: Inside the freezer, inspect the rear bottom area for ice buildup. A blocked drain can cause water to overflow into the cabinet and onto the floor. Clear ice and flush the drain with warm water using a turkey baster.
- Inspect drain pan: At the rear bottom, locate the drain pan above the compressor. Ensure it is not cracked or overflowing. Clean any debris.
- Examine water lines: Inspect the plastic or copper water line from the household supply to the refrigerator and from the valve to the dispenser/ice maker. Tighten compression fittings and replace any cracked tubing.
- Filter housing: Check around the water filter and housing for drips. Ensure the filter is correctly installed and the O-rings are lubricated and seated.
- Monitor after repair: Restore power and water, then observe for leaks over the next 24 hours.
