Both refrigerator and freezer are warm; compressor not running; no error code.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before accessing the compressor area. Live voltage is present when running.
Step 1: Verify power
- Confirm the outlet has power by plugging in another appliance.
- Check the circuit breaker and reset if tripped.
Step 2: Listen for compressor and fans
- When powered, listen at the back for the compressor humming or clicking.
- If you hear repeated clicking every few minutes, suspect the start relay/overload.
Step 3: Inspect start relay and overload
- Remove the rear lower access panel to expose the compressor.
- Disconnect the start relay/overload assembly from the compressor terminals.
- Shake the relay gently; if it rattles or smells burnt, replace it.
Step 4: Test compressor windings
- With a multimeter, check resistance between compressor terminals (C-R, C-S, R-S). Values should be finite and not shorted to ground.
- If windings are open or shorted to ground, the compressor is faulty.
When to call a technician: Compressor replacement and sealed system work must be done by an EPA-certified technician.
