Possible Causes
Evaporator fan not running, Air damper stuck closed, Blocked air vents, Faulty fresh food thermistor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before removing interior panels.
- Check for airflow: Place your hand near the air vents in the fresh food section (usually on the back wall or ceiling). You should feel cool air when the compressor is running. If not, the evaporator fan or damper may be at fault.
- Inspect for blocked vents: Move large containers away from vents to allow proper airflow between freezer and refrigerator sections.
- Listen for fan: Open the freezer door and listen for the evaporator fan. If silent while the compressor is running, the evaporator fan motor may have failed.
- Check air damper: Some GE models use a motorized damper between compartments. If you hear clicking or see the damper stuck closed, the damper assembly may need replacement.
- Thermistor check: A faulty fresh food thermistor can misreport temperature and prevent proper cooling. Testing requires a multimeter; if readings are off, replace the thermistor.
