Possible Causes
Failed ice room thermistor, Loose thermistor connection, Damaged harness in freezer door, Control board sensor circuit fault
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before accessing the ice maker compartment or door wiring.
- Locate ice room sensor: On GE models with a separate ice room, the thermistor is usually behind a small cover near the ice maker.
- Inspect wiring: Check the harness from the ice room into the freezer door hinge area for pinched or broken wires.
- Test thermistor: Remove and measure resistance at a known temperature. Replace if readings are not within GE specifications.
- Control board: If a new thermistor and good wiring still result in E5, the main control board may be at fault.
