Possible Causes
Evaporator coil partially frosted due to defrost failure, Weak compressor, Low refrigerant charge, Faulty freezer thermistor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before removing panels. Do not attempt sealed system repairs yourself.
- Check temperature: Use a thermometer to confirm freezer is above 10°F. It should be around 0°F for proper freezing.
- Inspect frost pattern: Remove the freezer rear panel. A uniform light frost is normal. A solid ice block indicates defrost failure; a small frost patch suggests sealed system issues.
- Manual defrost if iced: Unplug and defrost fully for 24 hours. Then test defrost heater, thermostat, and thermistor and replace faulty parts.
- Thermistor test: Check the freezer thermistor resistance and replace if out of spec.
- Sealed system diagnosis: If frost pattern is poor and compressor runs constantly, a technician must check refrigerant charge and compressor performance.
