Possible Causes

Failed defrost heater, Open defrost thermostat/bi-metal, Faulty evaporator thermistor, Defective main control board defrost relay

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before accessing the freezer evaporator area or handling wiring.

DF indicates a problem in the automatic defrost system.

  • Check for frost buildup: Remove freezer drawers and the rear interior panel. If the evaporator coil is encased in solid frost, the defrost system is not working.
  • Inspect defrost heater: The heater is mounted at the bottom or around the evaporator. Look for breaks or burn marks. Test for continuity with a multimeter; replace if open.
  • Test defrost thermostat/bi-metal: Located clipped to the evaporator tubing. When cold (below freezing), it should show continuity. If it remains open when cold, replace it.
  • Check evaporator thermistor: On GE Café units, a thermistor monitors coil temperature. Test resistance against GE specifications; replace if out of range.
  • Manual defrost: As a temporary measure, you can defrost the coil by unplugging the unit and using towels and a fan (never use sharp tools or open flames). This will restore cooling for a short period.
  • Control board: If all defrost components test good, the main control board may not be initiating defrost and should be evaluated by a technician.
