Possible Causes
Open or shorted fresh food thermistor, Open or shorted freezer thermistor, Damaged sensor wiring, Failed main control board sensor input
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before removing interior light covers or control housings.
EL indicates a problem with one of the temperature sensors.
- Identify affected compartment: Check if the fresh food or freezer temperature is inaccurate or if one section is not cooling properly.
- Locate thermistors: In GE Café refrigerators, thermistors are usually behind small covers on the interior walls or clipped to the evaporator.
- Visual inspection: Look for broken wires, loose connectors, or sensors that have come out of their holders.
- Resistance test: Remove the thermistor and measure resistance at a known temperature (e.g., room temperature). Compare to GE specifications. Replace if readings are out of range or do not change with temperature.
- Check harness to board: Ensure the thermistor harness is firmly connected at the main control board.
- Board evaluation: If new thermistors do not resolve the EL error, the main control board may be defective and should be checked by a technician.
