Possible Causes

Main control board firmware error, Loose communication harness between UI and main board, Failed user interface (display) board, Electrical surge damage

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect power before removing control panels or boards. Static discharge can damage electronics; ground yourself before handling boards.

Step 1 – Power cycle the unit:

  • Unplug the refrigerator or turn off the breaker for at least 5 minutes.
  • Restore power and see if the SY code clears.

Step 2 – Check user interface connections:

  • Remove the front control panel or display bezel (usually snaps or screws).
  • Inspect the ribbon cable or harness between the UI and the main control board.
  • Reseat connectors firmly and check for corrosion or bent pins.

Step 3 – Inspect main control board:

  • Access the main control board compartment.
  • Look for burnt components, discoloration, or swollen capacitors.
  • Ensure all harnesses are fully seated.

Step 4 – Replace faulty board:

  • If the UI is unresponsive but the main board appears fine, replace the user interface board.
  • If the main board shows damage or SY persists after UI replacement, replace the main control board.

When to call a technician: If you are not comfortable handling electronic boards or if SY returns after board replacement, contact a GE Monogram technician.
